Be aware of the most common retirement mistakes, and half the battle will be done
Common retirement mistakes hold back most people in retirement to succeed as they dream of. This blog post was inspired by an article on the Spanish version of Quora, which talks about 35 things you’ll regret when you get old. I will not discuss the subjects of using sunscreens and dental care. There are much better resources on the web than this one to handle these problems.
What caught my attention when reading the article were the following 7 topics:
- Traveling
- Afraid of doing things
- Not leaving a job you hate
- Supporting other people to achieve their dreams
- Work too much
- Worry too much about everything
- Not spending more time with your loved ones
Analyzing the most common retirement mistakes
Every retiree’s case is a little different, and the people who aren’t having a great retirement likely have many stories about how things didn’t turn out well. Still, we can make some valid generalizations about the most essential retirement mistakes to avoid.
Before continuing to read this article, go back to the previous week’s article to understand why an online business is a perfect fit for retirees.
The opinions on this topic are as diverse as the number of people facing the problem. Therefore, I will analyze the 7 common retirement mistakes more in-depth based on my own experience and feelings.
Traveling
Who doesn’t want to travel? I love to travel and have visited more than 65 countries during my active corporate life. But that was business travel, which is something completely different.
A couple of months ago, I visited Barcelona with my wife. I can’t remember how many times I have traveled to Barcelona. But this time, it was a leisure trip…for the first time. Waah! What a difference
Travel when you have the opportunity. Let’s face it: the older you get, the more difficult it becomes to travel, for many reasons. These include” age diseases,” mobility restrictions, and financial resources.
Almost all obstacles today can be adequately handled. Check the video further down and get some tips.
Afraid of doing things
The truth is that when looking back in the mirror, you will almost always say things like:
“Why was I so afraid of this? “
With age, some “built-in” fears will always appear. Vulnerability due to diseases and reduced mobility will always exist. But financial treats and money in general also play an important role in this sense.
In today’s speedy digital world, many senior citizens feel unprepared to do what they probably should have done 30 years ago. All this is valid. It’s natural to be concerned. However, the beauty of digitalizing the daily environment is that it’s available to everyone. Age is not an obstacle but an excuse not to make things happen.
Not leaving a job you hate
How many are working year in and year out, decade after decade, with something they literally hate? We all understand that you have to pay bills to survive the lifestyle you have created. But if you don’t have a plan for improvement, you will most probably find yourself 40 years later in a work hell.
Society has been functioning for many years with a well-drawn pattern: Get your education. Conquer the labor market and get into the corporate world. Earn your money and climb the career ladder. Start spending money and create a material environment that corresponds to your social class niche.
At a certain point in life (if you haven’t been fired), retirement is “knocking on your door.” Say goodbye to the “safe” corporate world and find out what retirement funds offer.
Typically, this is the moment when the s**t hits the fan, and questions start to appear, like:
“What would have happened if I quit my “safe” job 30 years ago?”
You may find an answer to this question in the video further down.
Supporting other people to achieve their dreams
Yes, helping other people is always a good deed, but you should always search for a space where you can shine based on your achievements. Too many (I was one of them) need to recognize early enough that your talented performance, experience, and time investment have one single purpose: To create the dream of your boss!
The typical hierarchy of a boss, employee, and, ultimately, a customer is changing in today’s digital world. Thanks to the digital environment, competition has become tougher. Instead of a classical hierarchical structure, the customer and the customer experience are now in focus.
“We innovate by starting with the customer and working backwards. The focus is not the product but the customer. “
Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon
It’s not a coincidence that Amazon is as giant as it is.
Work too much
No one has ever stated on their deathbed that they are happy to have been working so much. Instead, they wanted to spend more time with their families and friends and do fun things together.
Why do you have to wait until “death is knocking on your door” to come to this insight?
Be disciplined and determine what you have to do every single day. Do it and write it down. Plan something you look forward to after work, like going to the gym, reading a book, or doing yoga. Try to clock out when everyone else is still at the office or online. Don’t feel bad about stopping working before the rest. Feel proud that you manage your life.
Worry too much about everything
Constant worrying can keep you up at night and make you tense and edgy during the day. Even though you hate feeling like a nervous wreck, it can still be difficult to stop. For most chronic worries, anxious thoughts are fueled by the beliefs, both negative and positive, that you hold about worrying.
I love this formula to erase all kinds of worrying:
If the problem has a solution, why be worried? If the problem doesn’t have a solution, why be worried?
From today on, I invite you to take a different approach. Whatever problem is causing you to worry, give yourself permission to have it, but put off dwelling on it until later.
The beauty of just waiting is that the problem you were so worried about disappears when you approach it again.
“Worry is like a rocking chair: it gives you something to do but never gets you anywhere.”
Erma Bombeck
Not spending more time with your loved ones
Time is limited to spend with the people we love, and soon, it will be over. Make it count and make the most of it.
When was the last time you told your family and close personal friends that you loved them? Whatever you answer, do it today. Family is important. Whether you spend time with aunts, uncles, and grandparents or even with members of a family that’s not your own, there are many benefits to engaging with loved ones.
“Having a lot of friends and family around you – that’s all a part of wellness.”

7 Common Retirement Mistakes to Avoid
Retirement planning used to be a lot easier. You worked for the same company and retired at age 65 with a gold watch and a company pension.
Today, it’s more complicated. Most people will change employers many times over the course of their careers or work for themselves at some point.
Add to the equation that the saved money in your pension funds differs from before. The pension funds are constantly getting thinner and thinner.
