When doing what you love something will happen to you
Doing what you love sounds too obvious to even talk about. However, how many people actually live up to this “indisputable” desire?
“Doing what you love” is, in fact, one of the worst advice you can come across. All (at least almost all) the so-called gurus on the web make it sound like something magical you must have. They enchant you with well-studied marketing words, and your credit card is suddenly charged for a “must-have” course.
Have you been a “victim” of this? I have…
Isn’t the way of doing what you love for the rest of your life, especially when retiring, not crystal clear?
In this article, we will review the basics; once they are in place, it becomes almost impossible not to make it happen.
Doing What You Love Starts with Doing It!
Every journey has a start, and the best one is the one you sincerely love to do. So, just do it! Does it sound complicated? We all have at least one thing we love doing. With all our life experience as retired people, we probably have several things to add to the list.
Still confused?
Playing bridge, reading certain kinds of books, writing, playing golf, cooking…need more?
Doing what you love, you learned as a child, and it wasn’t that difficult. As an adult you need to go through the same process again, without restrictions…
To guide you on the journey, here are six practical tips to help you start doing what you love and do for the rest of your life.
Make it Social and Opened
I know it sounds incredible, almost unbelievable. Still, most people ignore the first step of doing what they love to do.
Why does this new and modern disease called “burnout” exist among a constantly increasing portion of all working adults?
Why do statements like “Thank God it’s Friday,” “Monday blues,” and many others exist?
“Burnout is nature’s way of telling you, you’ve been going through the motions, your soul has departed.”
– Sam Keen
People all over the world in different working environments, trading their time and knowledge for a monthly paycheck, are in the group with a high risk of burnout.
Once retired, spending most of your life dedicated to building someone else’s dream while your own future is put on standby could create a dangerous vacuum the day you say goodbye to corporate life.
As always, there are many different paths to your ideal lifestyle. When about to enter the group of retirees, I found my online future popping up like something that could be what I would love to do.
I started my blog, “Life Race,” and found it joyful. As a complete newbie in the online environment, not talking about the blogging niche, many doubts and questions invaded my mind.
Instead of trying to get answers, I just skipped it and got started by going public. You keep yourself accountable by doing what you love, launching it, and making it public.
By acting this way, I could often think through what I love with this kind of activity. Honesty to myself is vital, and it really helped me with the next step.
Attraction Marketing
Writing a lot of articles and not having someone to share them with will transform you into a lonely artist. For whom are you publishing your blog posts? What response do you get? Do you earn any money by investing your time in something you and only you love?
You need to attract people with your articles. Finding your niche is the first step in attraction marketing. Talking about baby pampers with 65+ people or explaining to university students about arthritis issues for senior citizens would ignore your niche’s interest completely.
In LaunchYou, I learned how to define and find people in my niche.
Building an audience around your niche is another necessary topic to deal with. If done correctly, the continued construction of your audience will eventually include thousands of people interested in your stuff.
Many different autoresponders on the market offer the service to store names and email addresses for you and from where you can build your email campaigns. I use Aweber for three main reasons:
- It’s an excellent platform, especially for me as a non-digital-guru
- Their customer service is outstanding
- It’s synchronized with all LaunchYou applications, and no additional technical work is required
Building your audience or email list isn’t just doing what you love. It’s about engaging with your audience. Daring to provoke, asking questions, asking people to follow you, and sharing your content is work that requires a precise and necessary balance. Not dedicating sufficient attention to this task can result in negative responses and even unsubscriptions from your email list.
Make money while doing what you love
Money has always been a hot issue when discussing the emotions of doing what you love. What has money to do with what you love?
We all need money. It’s a necessary tool in our society. You need money to pay your bills and many other things…but you know what I mean.
Money helps you do what you love…easy like that. Without money, you have to return to your 9-5 corporate job, or when retired, accept that your monthly income probably won’t allow you to keep the lifestyle you want. View money as an amplifier, helping you to do what you love by 5x, 10x…25x, well, you decide, better.
The truth is that by monetizing what you love to do, you can expand your activity as you desire. Otherwise, it will remain a hobby, and you will have to search for your income elsewhere to survive.
Doing what you love to do for the rest of your life
You may have dreams about doing what you love to do to an income source you can live on and expand your expectations in life.
How come?
It’s all about solving people’s problems. We are all willing to pay for a solution that will improve our daily lives considerably.
Focus on your audience’s problems, not yours. If you are frustrated by your own issues, your contribution to the world will only be to create more problems. This way, you will never be able to transform your “hobby” into a full-time income source.
Your only path will be interacting with your audience and learning about their problems. I’m writing articles and being very active on my blog-related topics. I try my very best to understand my audience’s problems.
In the beginning, you will probably encounter many discrepancies and even find people who disagree with you. You’ll get nervous. That’s fine. You’re on the right track for growth.
Do not act like a scared ostrich
There is so much online activity; you’ll find everything from genuine experts to fake gurus.
To succeed, you must avoid burying your head in the sand like an ostrich, escaping what’s going on.
Do not play the role of an “I-know-everything-guru,” refusing:
- Paid mentorship and coaching
- Analyzing feedback from your colleagues
- Participate in courses and masterminds
- Create your own courses
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
– Albert Einstein
Follow the Einstein quote, and only expect and progress with a constant adaptation to your audience’s needs. Listen carefully and monitor what your audience is asking for. The route to success includes thousands of changes and repetitions.
While doing what you love to do, you need to be open-minded to many changes.
You don’t have to be the most brilliant guy in the room. Instead, be curious and do your very best to enter the heart of the real gurus acting in the same niche as you.
“If there are no roads you can walk, break down the walls!”
– Yoshiki Nakamura
Love is not always forever
OMG! This is just getting weirder…
Of course, doing what you love should be your leading star, but can you predict what you’ll love tomorrow? Life is a journey, and the same goes for what you love to do. A lot of things can change during the journey, and the winner will always be the one who adapts to the new circumstances.
When I started my blog in 2015, it was meant to be a blog focused on my true passion at that time: running, specifically marathon running. At the same time, I was transitioning from the corporate world to doing something on my own as a happy retiree.
The name of my blog, “Life Race,” includes both topics: running and a significant life change.
The intensive training required for marathon running allowed me to run 24 marathons, including Chicago, New York, Boston, London, and Berlin until my health condition decided to take another route. A heart problem forced me to abandon the training (so far), and my blog, “Life Race,” needed a new course.
With reasonably good experience in blogging, my next passion took off:
I help retirees find a meaningful and financially sane lifestyle. My website, The Golden Age Lifestyle, saw the light of day, and here we go.
The response has been incredible, as there are so many seniors out there searching for the correct balance in their life as retired:
- Something meaningful to do
- Financial freedom
