Don’t let your comfort zone kill you!
If your comfort zone is too “comfortable,” it’s high time to start thinking about growing as an individual and professionally.
When we get older, we start counting birthdays differently. In a way, we fall into the old proverb, “Time is short.” When I spontaneously passed my birthday, number 72, a few weeks ago, I started wondering how long I had left until my soul would head for a new and different destination.
Instead of immersing myself in a destiny over which I have no, or at least limited, control, why not improve my life now and today? No matter from which angle you try to approach the task, if you are serious with your intent, it all boils down to the first necessary step:
Step out of your comfort zone!
Time is short, but it will be even shorter if you remain in your comfort zone. Age is a very common excuse to accept to remain in your comfort zone. In an earlier article, we go through the comfort zone issues as something holding you back.
View your comfort zone as your new challenge
How you relate to and deal with your comfort zone varies greatly depending on the phase of your life. As teenagers, the group pressure to wear the same type of clothes and use the same kind of vocabulary dominates our attitudes and actions.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is impossible if you don’t have a powerful personality. In the worst-case scenario, tragical bullying could even be the consequence.
Things change a bit as you grow up, get an education, and enter the labor market. However, the fear of not “fitting in” is always there. Corporate styles dictate the frame, and from there, your comfort zone will get its definition as well.
Being Kicked Out of Your Comfort Zone
For years, I worked in the corporate world. I would say (without bragging) that I had quite a straight and successful career, ending up as CEO in Latin America for a multinational corporation.
My salary and fringe benefits were pretty good, and together with my family—my wife and three kids—we were living a comfortable and pleasant life.
The pressure from my European headquarters could sometimes be tough. After all, shareholders were after their ROI on their investments. But, now, with a “helicopter view,” my life is in a sort of comfort zone.
Blizzard on a blue sky
Suddenly, in the year 2000, the “bomb explodes.” The division to which I belonged was sold! It was the first time in my professional life that I came to the insight that no matter your position, you are just a brick in a commercial game.
You provide the corporation with the knowledge, experience, and hard work it needs. You earn your money for your service, and that’s it. In other words, you are trading your time for money.
The new owners have a new strategy, and my service is no longer needed.
Wake-up call
What happened to me was immediately shocking. It was like being woken up at 3 a.m., and somebody forced you to do 200 push-ups.
The good life with a golf club and fringe benefits is no longer there.
The positive side when you get hit in the head and wake up from a dream life is the action you have to take.
At the age of 58, a new era in my life would take place.
Dances with the wolf
The best thing that ever could happen to me, even if at the age of 58, was to be kicked out of my comfort zone. The movie from the 90ths, “Dances with Wolfs,” with Kevin Kostner, made a strong footprint on me; in a way, I found myself in a “dances-with-wolfs” environment.
Long story short, I launched my own company, and everything seemed to be a great success. Suddenly, the principal supplier changes their strategy, and my company falls to pieces. I lost millions, but I gained a new experience. Every failure always has something to teach.
After a dark night, sunrise will always come
Fortunately, my experience and knowledge were in demand, and other large corporations were interested in what I could provide.
The first decade of this millennium was spent living a nomadic life in different countries, which ended up in my favorite country, Mexico, where I’ve been living for 15 years.
With the “wake-up call” from the corporate world, at 60, I actively surf around to see what a senior adult like me could find in the digital world that fits my ambitions, background, and interests.
This active search would only happen if I had been out of my comfort zone twelve years earlier.
Grow by Stepping Beyond Your Comfort Zone
Most seniors of my age refrain from trying anything new that relates to the Internet. The explanation is as sad as it is true: Your comfort zone holds you back. Thanks to being kicked out of my comfort zone, I could start a new business after experiencing all the failures on my way to where I am today.
It’s true that “time is short,” but your comfort zone syndrome is the main reason you’re not taking the next step in your life.
In the video, I will share some valuable tips that will help me enter the world of online marketers as a grown adult, an environment erroneously earmarked for the younger generation.

Every dream has its path. Let’s say that you really would like to be one of these successful guys doing business online, but you have no idea how to make it happen. Your first step will be to try.
Believe me, but the absolute scariest part is that you have to try, and the reason why? You become a victim in your own comfort zone! It takes guts and courage to step out of comfort, but the same is necessary to find a new job or whatever challenge is on your agenda.
How to Escape from Your Comfort Zone
Our brains resist new behaviors, challenges, new…whatever you want. When your brain plays the old story of “it’s too hard, I’m too old, it feels scary,” put up a big fat STOP sign right there.
You want to escape your comfort zone, right?
You will need to think differently, my friend. Replace the old story statements like, “I think I can do it, It sounds like fun, Let’s do it.
Trust me (the reason I reveal my story above), the best thing that has happened to me is finding Mentors and LaunchYou. They understand me, have the solutions you need, and never leave you alone.
