Can you be too old to start a business?
“You are too old to start a business!” Have you ever heard that argument (LOL)?
It’s true that both Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook and Bill Gates Microsoft at the age of 19. Steve Jobs was a bit “later” and did not start Apple until he was 21.
On the other hand, Robert Noyce didn’t start Intel until he was 41. Ray Kroc started McDonald’s at the age of 52, and Arianna Huffington launched The Huffington Post at the age of 55.
The list can be longer, but with these examples, the question has to be rephrased to “Can You Be Too Old to Start a Business?”
If You Can’t Be Too Old to Start a Business, Then…
If age isn’t a decisive variable for a business start-up, what can it be then?
When scanning around on Google to figure out what these critical elements for success could be, the list is almost endless. However, there are a few variables that always pop up.
- Hard work
- Passion
In a way, these two key factors are congruent with each other. If you are passionate about what you are doing, you can work around the clock if necessary, but if you find the work too hard, your passion probably isn’t strong enough.
The digital world has changed the conditions
The continuously ongoing digital transformation changes the rules of the game. We, who belong to the more mature generation, have seen a shift in doing business never ever seen before.
Thanks to digitalization, starting a business online is much easier today. The most significant changes digitalization has led to are:
- Faster
- Easier
- Cheaper
As you can notice, there are no age-related factors.
Thus, the key to your successful start-up is to find the passion for what you pretend to do. One unique advantage for us belonging to the baby boomer generation is that we bring a life experience with us, which often is worth gold when starting up a new business.

The truth is that your age is no barrier to what you would like to do. Instead, it could be a limitation you put on your mind. The mindset is as decisive as your own faith in yourself.
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
Mark Twain
