Achieving personal growth after 65 has nothing to do with luck or random happenings. There is only one thing we know 100% for sure about our lives: one day will be the last day on this planet! All other things happening in our lives, we can direct and influence in one way or another.
At 74, I often reflect on how life has been so far and what to expect for the rest of this journey, fostering a sense of purpose and motivation for my own path.
Unlike many in my age group, I see retirement as an exciting gift: 40+ hours per week to pursue what truly matters to you, sparking enthusiasm for this new chapter.
Instead of a rocking-chair-like retirement, this is the moment to achieve personal growth, but now on my terms. To actually achieve personal growth, I created my own formula. This 2×3 performance formula is my compass for optimizing navigation towards the goal I have.
What Is The 2×3 Performance Formula?
To make this tool more practical, let’s explore how it can be tailored to your personal goals, whether they involve health, learning, or social connections, so you can see its versatility in guiding your growth.
View life as two different circles working together. On one side, what I call the “Certainty Circle. In that circle, we have to deal with Health, Mindset, and Aging. As a starting point, let’s share the cake equally among these three factors.
Aging, and how to affect it
Many argue that you can’t change your aging, but it’s only half the truth. Sometimes you meet a 50-year-old person looking like 70, but you can also meet a 70-year-old person looking like 50. How come?
According to my self-created formula, if you pay more attention to health and mindset, the aging part gets a smaller slice of the cake. Simple like that!
The past, present, and future
The second circle, which I call the “Action Circle,” spans the past, present, and future. This is a trickier circle if you don’t watch out for the rabbit holes.
Let’s do the same exercise here, and give each part the same share of the cake. When talking to friends and other people I know, discussions tend to go toward the past. That’s fine, as we all want to remember nice things that happened in life.
However, when using the past as an excuse for not acting in the present, it can easily turn into something that stops, or at least slows down, your actions toward personal growth.
How often do you hear phrases like,
“When I was younger, I could do that,” or
“If I only had the same level of energy as before…”
The Way to Achieve Personal Growth in Retirement
By actively working with these two circles, you can both influence your aging and outline the future you want. It’s no rocket science, but a way to take control of your future and not let circumstances predict it.
Here’s my way of doing it, which you can start to apply today. Let’s start with the “Certainty Circle.”
Health
As a former passionate marathon runner, I had to leave that passion four years ago after detecting a heart problem. Indeed, it was a tough moment, but it didn’t deter me from exercising. Frequent jogging and long walks help me to keep up with my exercise.
By using my iPhone to track my performance, I set a minimum of 10,000 steps per day, which roughly corresponds to 7km. No excuses, I just do it, no matter the weather conditions or other circumstances. It helps me to keep up with my physical conditions.
As we age, our muscle mass naturally diminishes. To compensate for that biological progress, I add strength training to the weekly training program.
Even though I love good food, to keep my heart healthy, I avoid certain foods. No sugar whatsoever. You get sufficient glycose intake through the rest of what you’re eating. Red meat gets a low priority, and avoid unhealthy oils.
I can go on with my menu set up, but you got my point.
Mindset
This part can be divided into many different sections, but the overall goal should always be to stay positive. In a world with conflicts all over the planet, it’s easy to read and watch all you see, but how will it influence your mindset?
I always start the day by reading the most important headlines to stay updated on what’s going on, but I refuse to dive into all the articles and videos framed by one scandal after another. Today’s world must be an excellent place for all people in the communication field, as they are constantly nurturing you with “news” that gets you triggered.
Social media keeps us as “hostages,” and scrolling all day long on your phone contributes only to one thing: keeping you as an Internet “slave”. I have a Facebook account, Pinterest, X, WhatsApp, YouTube, and all other well-known apps, but I assign a specific time every day, generally at the end of the day, to check my social media platforms.
Part of my mindset (more about it later) is to build something that lets me share my experience, skills, and knowledge with the world. I dedicate a lot of time to building it, which has now become my business.
As a routine before going to sleep, I always “clean” my head with a challenging Sudoku puzzle. Besides, getting me to break with all that has happened during the day helps exercise my brain, which is needed at our age as seniors.
Aging
Coming back to my “Certainty Circle,” by giving health and mindset a bigger share of the circle, aging is getting a smaller share. And this is the truth. By dedicating more time to what’s important for you, you are “getting younger,” in the sense that you’re holding back your aging.
You can not do much about your biological aging, but by taking care of your health and mindset, you will become mentally younger than what your age actually is.
How Life Can Be Used to Achieve Personal Growth
Looking into the “Action Circle,” there is a lot to do to achieve personal growth.
How life was
As retirees, we have many memories from the past, both positive and negative. By using negative memories correctly, you can add something to your personal assets: you have learned unique, personal lessons. Use them not as excuses, but as what to watch out for going forward.
The same goes for your positive memories. You have built a skill set and an account of knowledge and experience. This is a unique asset of yours; only we, with some years behind us, can use it to our advantage.
How life is
What your life is, it’s what it is. But how do you take advantage of your “personal asset?” Too many create a barrier between the past and the present. Why? Because of the difficulty in seeing the connection. Work was one thing, and retirement is a new chapter.
Indeed, it is, but what if you can tie those two chapters together and create something you’re passionate about?
How life can become
The life you construct for your future as a retiree is about connection. It’s about how you use your “personal asset” (skills, knowledge, and experience) to do something you like and are even passionate about.
Let’s assume that you’re a retired teacher in mathematics. You love mathematics, and you are damn good at it. How would it be possible to connect your life experience with a future lifestyle?
Today, in this digital era, the possibilities are enormous.
Imagine if you could reach out to people who are screaming after your knowledge. The good news is that it’s easier than ever.
Watch this video, and learn how I did it.
Retirement isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s the start of a new chapter in your life. Tie together the two circles, “Certainty Circle,” and “Action Circle,” and create something you will be proud of.
“For many, retirement is a time for personal growth, which becomes the path to greater freedom.”
Robert Delamontagne
