Music isn’t the only thing you can learn from the Beatles

The idea to write about what you can learn from the Beatles didn’t arise until after publishing more than 600 blog posts. And what is so remarkable about that? They’re my absolute top musicians of all time!

The idea of writing what you can learn from the Beatles popped into my mind some days ago when I read an article in which music wasn’t the only topic. Never before had I thought about such an angle of the theme, and it shows one important thing you can learn from the Beatles.

Think out of the box!

Their first tour outside the United Kingdom in 1963, where they appeared live on Swedish television, was a significant milestone in their career. As an 11-year-old kid (not even a teenager yet!), this event completely hooked me on their music, style, and performance in general.

I never got the opportunity to see the Beatles live. When I finally attended a live concert with Paul McCartney in New York in 2022, one thing stood out besides all the fantastic music. The primary marketing concept from the Beatles era remained the same.

To Learn from The Beatles Can Change Everything

To Learn from The Beatles Can Change EverythingNo matter your music preferences, no one can deny that the Beatles, in many ways, changed the world. Their completely new music style in the early sixties and the unique way of making a complete package of their music and lifestyle have influenced many global leaders to learn from the Beatles.

From being a 100% music group, the Beatles became a style, a brand, and a way of viewing things from different angles. Few musicians in history have incited so many other groups of people to change their ways of doing business as the Beatles have.

Many entrepreneurs have adapted ideas from the Beatles to transform whatever they are up to. The list can be extended when determining what these changes are framed around. The 7 most important lessons I got to learn from the Beatles are the following:

Innovation

I still remember, as if it were yesterday, when the Beatles appeared on the Swedish TV screen on that magical Saturday, October 30th, 1963. Before even considering the music they played, the focus was on their hairstyle, boots, and collarless grey suits.

They literally broke all the stylish rules of the time. I remember my mother watching the entire performance of their show. As a traditional mom, she had to protest against these long-haired youngsters, who grabbed the attention of everyone watching the show.

Everything was different from traditional behaviors. This first image was a tremendous hook that caught the attention.

Of course, the music, which sincerely became a secondary part of their musician package, made them famous in the long run. Their unique sound also broke pre-framed rules in the music industry. I’m not a music expert (actually, I’m far away), but I have learned that the way they broke the traditional sequence of guitar accords shaped the base for their new and unique sound.

As entrepreneurs, we have a lot to learn from this:

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment
  • Find out what works for you
  • Embrace your winning concept

Work on your brand

The Beatles worked hard behind the scenes to create their brand, fine-tuning it, making changes, and adding new things to find a solid brand identity. Their manager, Brian Epstein, the commercial guru behind their brand, became essential to their success.

The famous composer team Lennon & McCartney developed a unique and revolutionary music label together with their producer, George Martin. Later in their career, they created the record brand Apple, which Steve Jobs had problems with before he could use the same name for his brand.

In the Beatles’ early phase, before Brian Epstein and George Martin came into the picture, the first name was the Beetles and later the Silver Beetles. The Beatles is a hybrid of the original name, the Beetles, and tweaking it with the word “beat” to make a relation to a word that by that time was adapted by the music industry to something significant to the rhythm style.

As entrepreneurs, the Beatles show us how important it is to work hard on your brand and create an identity that appeals to what the market searches for.

  • Your brand should be easy to memorize and remember
  • The brand should resonate with your audience
  • Make sure your consumers can quickly identify the awareness of your brand

Never give up

When the Beatles launched their first hit, “Love Me Do,” Decca Records rejected them, arguing that the kind of music the Beatles represented had no market demand.

A new try, and with eager and professional work made by Brian Epstein, they could finally launch “Love Me Do” with EMI.

Instead of accepting Decca Records’ negative response, they worked harder than ever to take a new approach, this time with EMI. The rest is history.

As entrepreneurs, we can learn from the Beatles:

  • Never give up on something you are passionate about and strongly believe in
  • Let a first negative result be the ignition to work even harder

Take risks

In the early days of the Beatles, they lived for a while in Hamburg to get gigs. It was a risk, but with their passion for what they were doing, nothing could hold them back.

Later in their career, they launched music with philharmonic orchestras involved. This was the first time anyone in their niche had done it, and the risk was high that it could fail. However, taking calculated risks is necessary to develop.

When the Beatles launched “Yesterday” only with Paul McCartney and a string ensemble, they again broke the traditional frame. A risk? Of course, but we all know what happened, and “Yesterday” is still considered one of the most successful songs ever.

What can we learn from the Beatles as entrepreneurs:

  • Taking risks will always be an essential part of your development
  • Risk-taking enables and encourages innovation, which can be an essential product or service differentiator

Teamwork matters

Throughout the Beatles’ career, teamwork has been a key factor in their success. When performing at the Cavern in Liverpool in the early sixties, Brian Epstein found them and immediately saw the potential in this pioneering group of passionate musicians.

As the project started to roll out, George Martin joined it. Since then, hundreds of different team members have been added to the historical project that the Beatles represent.

You can always argue that it was good luck that Brian Epstein found them at the Cavern, but it could be anyone who came across the Liverpool guys. The takeaway is that you have to be seen even to get the possibility of being discovered. Continued teamwork goes hand in hand with success.

As entrepreneurs, you can learn from the Beatles:

  • Teamwork is part of any success
  • You need to be seen to connect to the appropriate team members

Work hard

As a passionate Beatles fan, I have read a lot about their success story. It’s a journey filled with successes but also failures. The passion for their music and their music style, they never gave up even if times were tough sometimes.

The commitment to never give up, work hard, and make necessary changes along the road is an essential cornerstone of reaching the goal you’re striving for. When becoming a famous group worldwide, their continuous work to develop as professional musicians implied a lot of hard work. Nothing will last forever if you slow down on your hard work.

As entrepreneurs, what can we learn from the Beatles:

  • Without hard work, it’s difficult to achieve your goal
  • Hard work will always give you results in the end

Love the process

The Beatles had a genuine passion for what they were doing. Their entire career had ups and downs, successes and failures. However, you must be passionate about your actions to mobilize energy and motivation.

When the group was split, for many different reasons, all four members of the four fabs continued their work alone as artists. George Harrison, who had been in the “shadow” of the Lennon & McCartney label, suddenly arose as an excellent solo artist. John Lennon continued his journey as a musician until his tragic death, and even Ringo Starr, who had never been seen on the front line as a singer in the Beatles, started his solo career.

They all shared a burning passion for what they were doing, which united the four for one single reason: their love for the process.

So, loving the process is the key to success, no matter the journey’s direction.

What can we learn from the Beatles as entrepreneurs:

  • Love for the process is vital, no matter what direction your journey will take you
  • Love for the process will reflect your continuous work forward.
