Are you a victim of the corporate ladder lie?

More and more people are discovering the freedom of choice in the evolving labor market, liberating us from the shackles of the corporate ladder lie. This shift in perspective is empowering, redefining what a perfect job truly means and rapidly changing our way of making a living.

For many, including myself, the corporate ladder was the default path. We were taught that you go to school, get a degree, get a job, start consuming, get into debt, earn more money, and happiness comes automatically. But is this path (honestly) the path towards happiness? It took a personal journey to realize the truth.

We think we are happy because that’s the way we were taught, and I would say brainwashed. Deceases like “burnt out” become a common illness accepted by society.

So, what is the underlying reason for this new lifestyle? Could it be that the corporate ladder lie is pulling your leg? Perhaps it’s not until your daily work turns into a nightmare that you even consider this.

Of course, there are examples of highly successful people who have worked hard for a couple of years and then retired at the age of 35. But how many are they? Fear is too often holding back people to step “outside the box,” especially when reaching the age of retirement.

Modern Employee Slavery Due to the Corporate Ladder Lie

Slavery Due to the Corporate Ladder LieWhen I started my career, I ascended the corporate ladder faster than most. I was rewarded with a substantial salary and a comprehensive fringe benefit package. Overseeing the corporation’s international markets allowed me to live in different countries, a unique opportunity that enriched my personal growth and global understanding.

All the benefits made me blind to what I was missing in life. Endless working hours and being away from my lovely family were only some of the important life experiences I missed. Thanks to my extraordinary wife, who took care of the family and our three wonderful kids, I would say that my marriage didn’t break down.

Suddenly, the corporation I was working for sold the division I belonged to, and there was no place for me in the new organization. From one day to another, life changed dramatically.

It took me almost 30 years to be aware of the corporate ladder lie:

You are just one piece out of many in a corporation’s strategy!

“For the most ambitious young people, the corporate ladder is obsolete.”

–  Paul Graham

The corporate ladder lie that hit my head at the beginning of this millennium was a wake-up call and completely changed how I view life, work, and healthy living. Analyzing the “catastrophe” when you suddenly are without a job, and your career ladder becomes a false illusion also gives room for a more in-depth recognition of what you are missing.

Limited autonomy

Being part of a corporation limits your autonomy. You must follow the corporation’s rules, no matter how much you disagree. Your boss expects you to deliver value to the company’s overall goal, whether you agree or not. Often, you have to work on strategies you have difficulties resonating with.

If you try to speak out on what you truly believe and go against the strategy, you are widely “attacked” from different angles. Without solid arguments for your belief, you will look weak and can put your position at risk.

Under these circumstances, it’s more likely that you will adapt to the company’s idea. You can be wrong sometimes, but how often do corporations miss excellent new and groundbreaking ideas because of limited autonomy?

Title disease

Once into the ladder-climbing race, the path goes in one single direction: Up!

On all levels, leaders fight to get business wins. In a typical company hierarchy, the higher up in the organization, the more challenging the fights will be. It’s like a political race, where the ladder climb is often prioritized, and the company’s product or service goals become secondary. The higher up the corporate ladder, the more warlike and hostile the environment.

As an executive leader in the ladder-climbing race, you think twice before launching your true and perhaps correct ideas.

Revenue focus

No sane commercial organization acts without focusing on revenues. There’s nothing wrong with that, as survival depends on revenues and profits generated. Shareholders invest their money to earn dividends, and a corporation that doesn’t satisfy its shareholders will go down the drain sooner or later.

However, how often do leaders dare to take a step backward with the idea of taking two or more steps forward later? Steve Jobs is an excellent example. As a genuine entrepreneur, he saw the future differently and didn’t change his position. Apple is a highly successful and profitable company today, but Steve Jobs had to pay the consequences.

In 1985, he was fired from Apple due to his confrontation with the board of directors. In 1997, he returned to the company as CEO, and we all know the success story of Apple and Steve Jobs.

Risk-taking paralysis

The Steve Jobs story is an excellent example of what risk-taking can lead to. As a manager, you must take certain risks. It’s a daily consideration you need to keep in mind. Risks can disrupt business as usual. In the ladder-climbing environment, you often prefer to keep things plodding along to get paid your salary and bonuses for as long as possible.

Being part of a corporation is a tricky and unsafe route. If you aim for a higher position in the company, the shared vision of top management becomes your compass guide.

Limited family time

Last but not least, what happens to your family life while you are making a career?

Late meetings, fairs around the world, leadership training, and product launches—you name it—happen outside regular working hours.

If you don’t have a lovely and cooperative family who supports your career and ladder climbing, problems will occur. In many cases, divorce and family splitting occurs as a direct consequence. I was lucky to have a lovely family supporting me during the tough times when the corporate ladder lie kept me blind to everything except working.
