How to Create Your Retirement Paycheck (It’s not what you think.)

Retirement Paycheck: Why You Need More Than Just Pension Payouts

To rely solely on one retirement paycheck is like betting all your money on zero in a casino roulette game. You can have luck and live a wealthy life for the rest of your life. But most probably you will lose.

For too long, we’ve relied on the monthly pension payout as our sole source of retirement income. But it’s time to take control. Whether you’ve saved a significant amount or not, it’s within your power to change your financial situation. And I’ve yet to meet a retiree who doesn’t feel a sense of empowerment when they do.

Even if the situation varies from country to country, an increasing number of retirees are struggling with their financial circumstances. Let’s be clear: people are getting older, and less money is available for pension payouts. It’s like the cake for a party of 4 is the same, but now there are 10 people to eat from the exact same cake. You don’t need to be a scientist to understand that each piece of the cake will be much smaller than it was a few decades ago.

Before starting to write this article, I investigated on Google with my title phrase, “How to Create Your Retirement Paycheck.” All the articles that appeared in the search results were about managing your finances. Nothing wrong with that. Indeed, many of those companies are doing a great job, but your starting point (your available funds) remains the same.

Going back to my metaphor about the cake, will the cake be bigger just by putting icing on top? Of course not!

Your New Retirement Paycheck Should Be Something Different

During the COVID pandemic, not so long ago, a lot of people lost their jobs. Those who still had one had to convert their traditional workplace into a home office. The chaotic pandemic forced us all to find new paths, different from the old traditional ones.

Thanks to the well-developed digital environment in which we live, all this was possible. The interesting aftereffect was that while doing their “9-5” on a computer from home, why not do it for myself instead of for my boss?

According to the Bank of England, in the U.K., a dramatic increase in new solo entrepreneurial businesses started up during the pandemic. Similar trends have been observed during other types of crises, such as the 2008 financial crisis.

So, if a crisis is necessary to accelerate changes from traditional paths, let’s declare the limited funds for pension payouts as a crisis. The problem is that it’s not a dramatic crisis, but rather a gradual and smooth transition into our lives.

Frog in boiling water

Do you remember the fable about the frog? If you put the frog in boiling water, it will immediately jump out. It’s a crisis, and the survival instinct forces the frog to jump out immediately.

If the frog is put into lukewarm water that is gradually heated, it will not perceive the danger until it’s too late and will be cooked to death.

This metaphor illustrates how people may fail to recognize danger and react only when it’s too late.

The COVID pandemic was like a frog put into boiling hot water, and we all jumped out and found alternative routes. With the existing pension compensations, we are in lukewarm water, which can even feel comfortable. But the heat is rising, and you’d better jump out before you are “cooked.”

The only way to make it happen is to create an alternative source of retirement income.

Summary and conclusions

Retirement is, in no circumstances, the beginning of the end, but the complete opposite. Today´s digital world opens up a landscape of opportunities that no generation of retirees has seen before.

This is the moment to ride the wave towards where you want, and not what any outsider predicts. With these five steps, broaden your view, start a side hustle, find a rich system, dream into reality, and turn fear into an opportunity. The ignition is made.

Gone are the days when excuses like,

“Too old”

“No technical skills”

“No time”

“ Lack of experience”

bla, bla, bla…occupy your head and way of thinking, reacting, and talking.

From now on and the rest of your life, everything is forward. There are no rearview mirrors on your rocket. The accelerator will be your primary tool for reaching your goal and starting to create a new retirement paycheck, and ultimately becoming financially independent.
