Are you treating yourself as too old?

Let’s shatter the stereotype that you’re ‘too old’ when you reach retirement age. As I write this, I’m 72, but mentally, I’ve ‘stopped the clock’ at 50. This positive mindset has brought me opportunities and experiences I never thought possible.

Often, I think about how old my parents seemed to be in their 70s. They seemed much older than I feel now. Of course, my kids probably think I’m old, but that’s how it is. Life has changed a lot since my parents were in their 70s. Many people today in their 70s, 80s, and 90s are still in good shape. Just look at my favorite artist, Paul McCartney. He is 82 and still doing concerts for up to three hours without one single break.

The truth is that you’re never too old for anything in life, and if you decide, it should be like that.

In this post, I want to delve into what makes you treat yourself as too old and how to change that mindset. After reading this article, watch the video further down, “Avoid Treating Yourself as Too Old and Thrive as an Entrepreneur,” on how to stop treating yourself as too old and start living the life you deserve. It also explains how to adapt to a lifestyle you really want to have.

Treating Yourself as Too Old Has an Explanation

Treating Yourself as Too OldThere are various signs that you’re getting old. We can’t deny that life has a start and an end. It’s the way it is. Your life span depends on many different things, like genetic inheritance and how you have lived your life so far.

The saying, “You reap what you sow,” is valid when you reach your upper age. There is nothing you can change. However, you can always make an active “intervention” and catch up on bad habits, for example.

Let’s divide the action plan into two parts: the physical and the mental.

Physical reality and what to do about it

As we age, our bodies undergo some physical changes, but it’s important to remember that we have a lot of control over our health. We can do a lot to mitigate these changes and stay in good shape.

In our modern society, more people than ever suffer from overweight. Change your eating habits. Delete sugar from your food intake. You get enough sugar anyway. Did you know that a bottle of ketchup contains 50% sugar? Just give one example. Instead, focus on a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Diabetes is today one of the most common diseases.

When we get older, our bodies shrink. I’m 4 centimeters shorter today than when I was 40 years old. Your balance and body flexibility deteriorate with age. Do stretching and balance exercises. There are plenty of tips on training you can do at home.

Last but not least, daily carbo training should be implemented. You don’t need to be a runner but walk for at least 45 minutes daily.

Taking care of your physical performance should never be boring. At this point in life, satisfaction with what you are doing is essential. If you’re a heavy coffee drinker, continue that way, but cut your coffee to one or two cups daily. A glass of wine now and then should also be included in your lifestyle (if you like wine).

Once you feel your habits are under control and help you control your physical mindset, stick to them and live a happy life.

Mindset matters

In a way, humans belong to a group of strange species. There are unwritten rules on how we should dress, talk, behave, and act during each age phase. Something doesn’t fit in when you find a youngster behaving like an old gentleman. And when a person in his or her 70s dresses like a punk rocker, she or he is “crazy.”

When a person puts on the cap with the screen backward, it’s normal and even smart-looking. But if a grown-up adult does the same, how will you react?

However, no one reacts when Mick Jagger, for example, in his 80s, dresses like a modern teenager. Why?

Here, the exciting things come in. He is different! Yes, indeed, but what else differentiates him from the crowd? He has his own style, for whatever reason it can be.

It all comes down to your mindset, based on your ideas, values, and mindset. Maintaining a positive mindset in older age can lead to better health, increased longevity, and a more fulfilling life. It’s not about conforming to societal expectations but about living on your own terms.

I refuse to conform to the unwritten rules about how seniors should dress. I like to wear colorful T-shirts, jeans, or pants that match the color of my T-shirt. Sometimes, even my wife tries to change my mind, but I’m confident in my unique style.

The lifestyle we retirees should adapt to, according to the unwritten rules, also influences our lives. As a retiree, you should lay back and take it easy, perhaps playing golf with your friends and living a relaxing life until your time on earth ends.

No! I don’t want that kind of life!

Avoid Treating Yourself as Too Old and Thrive as an Entrepreneur

When you are in your 20s, you have a lot of time, but in your 70s, you have a lot of experience. Let this statement become a sort of guideline when you’re planning your life in retirement.

The youngsters with a lot of time—in fact, we all have 24 hours a day, no matter our age—use it to do something (hopefully, LOL). But how many seniors take the same advantage of their experience and skills learned during a lifetime?

Let’s kill the idea that entrepreneurship isn’t for seniors once and for all. Perhaps it had some validity decades ago, but thanks to digital development, we grown-up adults are more competitive than ever.

Do your homework before proceeding with transforming your idea into reality. That implies an in-depth investigation of what is the best fit for you and your business idea.
